Director of Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Chief Superintendent Owusuwaa Kyeremeh, has bemoaned the rising domestic violence cases in Ghana.
She attributed the numbers to societal stereotypes which have turn out to be hindrances for ladies of their try and develop. Talking on Asempa FM’s Y’asetenamu show, she stated the figures will continue to extend if efforts aren’t be made to alter societal perceptions and stereotypes towards women.
“It’s sad that some males are still living with the notion that the place of a woman is in the kitchen and should not be allowed to take part in any societal exercise however the days of confining girls to the kitchen are over and there’s the necessity for males, particularly to dwell with that,” she urged.
She mentioned the worry of some males losing their supremacy at home makes them resort to abusing their wives to interrupt them down.
“They go to the extent of refusing their wives the chance to take up management positions and likewise deny them entry to pursue their objectives and admirations,” she stated.
She, nevertheless, suggested males to just accept girls as members of society who may contribute to improvement and nation-building by not limiting them to traditional roles.
